Automated rescue lane formation in complex scenarios through intelligent connection

In emergency situations such as traffic accidents and disasters, every second counts. A quickly and correctly formed emergency lane can have a life-saving effect. Emergency services associations estimate that if emergency crews arrive four minutes earlier, the chances of survival increase by up to 40 percent. However, a correctly and timely formed emergency lane is very rare and difficult to implement without the proactive and careful actions of all road users. Many drivers do not have an overview of the situation of all the traffic around them, which is why they often do not react correctly. As a result, emergency vehicles get stuck in traffic jams and thus lose valuable time.

AORTA explores and tests the automated formation of an emergency lane based on automation, connectivity and artificial intelligence methods. This will be achieved through the integration of infrastructure, sensor technology, communication, vehicle technology and display functions, which enable coordinated decision-making levels of various degrees of abstraction from the operations control centre to the automated driving manoeuvre in small or large areas.
